How to create a Phone Free School:

You don’t have to be perfect. Start where you are; we’ll meet you there with resources, guidance, and community.

Plan the Switch

Audit procedures that currently rely on student phones (contacting home, after-school changes, exceptions, emergency comms) and map a simple rollout timeline (planning > pre-launch > launch > follow-up > review). Confirm how families/students will communicate during the day and how exceptions (IEP/medical) will be documented.

Communicate & Onboard

Share the "why" with staff, students, and families, address concerns directly, and emphasize the shift is rooted in care, not control. Use letters, presentations, and FAQs to set expectations before day one.

Make It Stick

Choose a storage method that keeps phones truly inaccessible all day (lockable pouches, lockers/cabinets, or low-cost envelopes/pouches) and pair it with clear, school-wide consequences, enforced the same way in every classroom.

Launch, Learn, Celebrate

Go live with all-hands support, then check in, make small adjustments, and share early wins. Collect post-launch feedback/surveys and, if helpful, join the PFSM/UNC research program to evaluate impact.
